Polar Plunge

I signed up to do a Polar Plunge in a couple months. (a fundraiser where you jump in a freezing cold lake during the winter). My brother signed up to do it as part of the fire department he works for, and he challenged me to do it, and since I can't stand the idea of my brother outdoing me at something, I had to agree to his challenge.
I'm not much of a cold-weather person. I've always lived in fairly warm climates with mild winters - and when it gets cold out, I usually stay inside as much as possible. Part of me is kind of excited to try something new as far as clothed swimming goes - but part of me is pretty nervous about jumping into legitimately freezing water!
Anyone ever done this before? Any suggestions on what I should wear? And what should I prepare for? Is it really as cold as it seems? Or is there a way to make it not be so bad??
