I guess that conventional people have been so conditioned by uniformity (e.g. school uniform, swim speedos, rows of identical consumer items, etc) that they feel disoriented when somebody does something different. I've swum in a tie also, but it was round my forehead as a headband, or round my ankle tied in a bow, as an ankle bracelet. As none of my shirts have buttons, I never wear one round my neck :) (The original use-case of a necktie was to cover the shirt buttons). Celebrate diversity :) Always fill your day with wonderful things :)
