When I was a teenager in the early 70's, I didn't own a swimsuit. Everyone wore cutoffs. We were comfortably upper middle class in the southern California suburbs, so we could easily afford swimsuits, but no one wore them. Public pools had clothing rules, but I never went to them because most people I knew had pools.

It was also fairly normal for people, if they showed up somewhere without a suit or shorts, to just swim in their jeans. No big deal. (But that didn't happen often enough to my liking!) I think swimwear is the one area of modern life that has gotten more formal and rule bound with time.

I was rather shy about my wet clothes interest, so I never purposely "forgot" my suit, but we would have water fights with friends where the rules were clothes only. Scout hikes and camping was the other place I could wear whatever I wanted (See my "Natural Waterslide" post below), but even the waterfront area at our camp had a "no long pants or long sleeves" rule except for lifesaving classes. But in the surrounding streams we could wear whatever.

To answer the original question, I love wet clothes for the weight and the clinging feeling on my skin when I get out of the water, and the shiny look of myself and others when dripping wet. I also love the floating and swishing in the water. I always had the desire to swim clothed that since I was at least 5 younger.
