Perhaps due to heredity...
My father has only been swimming in cut-offs or long jeans with a T-shirt since he was 12 years old, as my grandparents once told me.
He was at a camp for 4 weeks and was only allowed to take very few clothes with him, so he only had a 501 cut-offs and a long 501 as trousers. On the very first day, all the boys went swimming in the lake. The younger ones wore cut-offs, while the older ones all swam in long jeans.
The very next day, all the boys went swimming in long jeans and T-shirts.
Even after the camp, most of the boys only wore jeans for swimming. Even in the outdoor pool, which initially caused trouble until the lifeguards realised that they couldn't do anything about the large number of boys. So they were all allowed to go swimming in the outdoor pool, at least in cut-offs.
My grandparents didn't care what my father went swimming in.
So neither I nor my brother ever had to wear anything other than jeans for swimming. As a result, we don't own any swimming shorts or underwear.
