It turned out to be a relatively inexpensive part. It was the labor of getting to it that was expensive. It was a split hose under the intake manifold. That's why it wasn't obvious. I hadn't noticed any steam, so I had no idea there was no coolant left in the cooling system.

Back in 2003 there was an incident where the cops actually did see me covered with mud (though I wasn't near my vehicle). Apparently some ATV riders had reported me. Ironically the ATV riders were probably trespassing on state trust land, but I had a recreational use permit, only it was inside two Gladlock bags in the chest pocket of my overalls. The police had a very strange concern. They wanted my assurance that I didn't have a firearm in the mud pit with me. They asked a bunch of other strange questions and ultimately concluded that no crime had been committed.
