LeviLovr's advice about thrift stores is very good. You will find some very cheap used shoes there. If you live in an urban area, there's probably one within bicycle range. I once knew a fellow who bicycled from Fort Worth to Austin in 17 hours, but you can probably find a store with less effort than that.

If you're going to the woods, you might check out the possibility of nearby creeks and ponds as locations for cleanup. I live in the desert, so one method I sometimes use is to let the mud dry on my clothes and flick it off. If your home has a yard with a garden hose, you can clean up outdoors that way. Of course if you go mudding during a heavy rain, that can sometimes wash you clean afterward.

As far as other people seeing you and thinking it strange, remember that society expects some strange and adventuresome behavior of adolescent males. As the cliché goes, "Boys will be boys."
