When in university, I used to do this with water, not mud. I'd get my underwear, a sleeveless or similar shirt and maybe socks wet, then put all my other regular clothes on top, including my shoes. Sometimes I'd even go out like that first, allowing the water from the stuff underneath to soak through. Of course when I got back I'd always fully soak everything.
I'll have to try mud again sometime, but it's always been something I like watching others do, but not do myself.
As for the walking alone, I've heard of this too but also walk alone all the time. I've never had someone say anything, and even wave or acknowledge others walking by (also many alone).
