That often happens when the humidity is low as it often is here. Sometimes on a particularly long hike, I'll start muddy and end dusty, as the mud curls, dries and flakes off. If I'm hiking on a rainy day it obviously doesn't happen, but then I sometimes get washed clean by the rain.
