In the UK there has always been a certain amount of rivalry between the individual kingdoms (England & Scotland), the principality (Wales) and the province (Norther Ireland), but also a feeling of pride in the United Kingdom and being British. Sadly that has lessened in recent years with the creation of devolved governments (albeit with limited powers) for Scotland, Wales and Norther Ireland.

Within England there has always been a divide between "the tough, no nonsense Northerners" and the "soft, pampered effete Southerners" as defined mainly by the Northerners, I think. If you've ever seen Monty Python sketches featuring tough Yorkshire men boasting about the hardships they endured as kids and trying to out do each other you will know what I mean, things like "We grew up with fifteen of us in a two bedroom house with only cold running water and we walked 5 mile to school each day with no shoes." only to be bettered by his mate with "There twenty-two of us kids in one bed, and we sherd a cold tap outside with six other houses. We walked ten mile to school and carried sacks of coal to be delivered on the way for our Dad. It were tough." That is not exactly it, but you get the idea.

Most real rivalry nowadays is between soccer team supporters but even they are not necessarily based on where you live geographically, you can live in London and still be a legitimate Manchester United fan from 150 miles away despite having teams like Arsenal or Chelsea on your doorstep.
