Yes, back in the 1990's I took some hikes in and near Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona, and, having done one right after a snowstorm, I can assure you that the mud there is very nice. It's a thick, sticky red clay. I haven't gone there recently because the National Forest Service started charging a parking fee. If they just collected it there, I wouldn't have a problem, but you have to visit a local store to buy the special parking pass, and I don't know which stores those are.

Another area where I used to go for wet fun was much closer--the Salt River east of Phoenix. I noticed that in winter the water was a lot warmer than that of the swimming pool, but the trouble was that in winter it was crowded with fishermen, and I didn't want to be wading or swimming near them lest I scare the fish. In summer, on the other hand, the current is stronger and one must dodge rafters going by at high speed.
