I've had conferences in your area a few times and it's one dryyyyyyyyy area! I bet the typical monsoon season is a 'rush' in a lot of ways when all those dry creek beds fill like rivers!
So many 'sprinklers' that would at least provide some wet fun opportunities, but if you're lookin for mud I'm sure its mostly hard as a rock most of the time. I've taken a couple trips further north and found some nice river areas that seem to stay wet near Sedona that are a lot of fun to hike.
Hope this spring provides a bit more opportunity for you.
