The red stuff is just what it looks like--iron oxide, and yes it does stain. Famously it's the soil of northern Georgia. There are also places in northern and northwestern Arizona that have that kind of soil. A former co-worker of mine who grew up in northwestern Arizona said she learned early that you don't wear anything light-colored when you go camping, because you'll never get that stuff out of your clothes.
