I have always found that wearing jeans in the mud is a great way to beak them in. As you said they come out softer and seem to fade a degree or two, much more so than wearing them swimming or washing them. I have only worn blue or black jeans in mud and they always come out fine afterwards. Over the years I have had to throw away some items of clothing after going in mud - either because they ripped, which was usually the reason, or because they were so discolored by the mud that I couldn't wear them for everyday use and would save them for when I knew I would be going back in mud. That usually happened with shirts. Most everything else cleaned up pretty well. But I never had an issue with jeans or anything made of denim. They were always fun to get wet and muddy, always felt great, and in my opinion were improved by the mudding experience.

Hope you get your jeans muddy many more times.
