As a teenager I was in the sea scouts (a bit like the sea cadets). We had several trips out to the coast to practice water saefty. Mostly this was in wetsuits or (in the summer) swimwear. But once we had to do it in our sea scouts uniform. This was fairly thick, formal trousers, socks and boots, a t shirt under a formal shirt, and thich round neck jumper on top of that. We even wore our berets! We jumped in the water from the pier into the sea in this gear then had to swim back to the shore. I can still remember the feel of those heavy clothes in the water.
