I know he tried to, but I don't know if he succeeded. The fountains at Caesar's Palace were definitely a failure. As for his nickname, he was inspired by a detention officer. He was in jail in Butte, Montana for the misdemeanor on which he would build a career (reckless operation of a motorcycle), and a detention officer was doing evening roll call. He said, "Knievel...Knaufel." After they both acknowledged, he said, "We've got Evil Knievel and Awful Knaufel."
