Hi Ry. Good to hear from you. Hope you are in one piece, and keeping well.
No, there were no shoes or socks.
Boys brigade uniform was basically just school clothes, with a knitted blue jumper with Boys Brigade in white across the front. The various badges that you could earn were worn on pads attached to your arms.
I often wondered what people on the beach thought about seeing around 25 lads dressed in black trousers and white shirts racing into the sea.
Of course in those days, we are talking around 50 years ago, clothes were made out of much thicker material than today. No easycare fabrics then, everything had to ironed after washing, and took much longer to dry. The plus side was that clothes were much heavier when wet, and stayed wet and clingy for much longer.
Still, this was an event that I remembered for many years afterwards.
