As a kid and teen I often went shirtless outside on warm days to work or play. I began swimming in t-shirts around age 9, when we were at the beach and I asked my mom if I could swim in my shirt. I didn’t give a reason but she said yes. From then on I did it quite frequently, but still held back in many situations, I was just shy about it.
Although I have blonde hair I tanned beautifully, so I could never use the "prevent sunburn" excuse to swim in a shirt. I didn't get my first sunburn until I was 17 (I guess my skin had changed?). By then I had gained enough confidence to wear a t-shirt in the water most of the time, depending on the social situation. I was always more likely to wear a shirt in a natural body of water than a pool.
The holy grail for me was a shirt and long pants, but I did that rather rarely all through my youth, and never until just before I turned 13.
Like you, I only wear regular cotton or cotton blend t-shirts. The one time I tried a rash guard I felt like I was wrapped in a plastic bag. I do have a microfiber long sleeve shirt that I would like to try but I haven’t had a chance to test it yet.
I was somewhat like you. As you said in your previous post about swimming in a friend’s shirt, I would only go shirtless if I knew I wasn’t going to get wet, backwards of how most people do it.
Because of my circumstances I rarely have a chance to get wet any more (I’m in my 60’s). I’m lucky if I get a couple of swims with shorts and t-shirts in a year.
