At the last swimming class I tried it all.

I stood at the edge of the pool, watching the others already in the water. Two boys, both in clothes. One was wearing a tracksuit, the loose top slightly puffed up in the water, while the pants clung tightly to his legs. The other was in white training pants, which I knew would turn almost see-through as soon as they got properly wet. Very brave...

Today, I had chosen cargo pants, along with my usual socks and sneakers. A double-layered T-shirt and a zipped hoodie completed the look. Last week, I had swum in jeans and a zipped hoodie, but today I wanted to take it up a notch. I felt a tingling excitement. The swimming instructor gave us the starting signal: “Retrieve the rings from the bottom of the pool, climb out, jump back in, and grab the next one!” He didn't react to my shoes at all.

With a strong push of my legs, I jumped into the water. Immediately, I felt the clothes clinging to me. The hood filled with water and tugged slightly at my neck. My sneakers, so comfortable on land, now felt heavy as water seeped into them. But I liked the sensation. It was different from simply swimming in swimwear – somehow more thrilling.

Underwater, it was a bit harder to move. The hood slowed me down every time I turned my head, and the cargo pants seemed to hold my legs back just a little. But that’s what made it special. I reached the first ring, grabbed it, and pushed off the pool floor with my feet.

When I surfaced, I paddled back to the edge of the pool. Water streamed from my sleeves and pant legs as I set the ring down. My sneakers squeaked slightly as I pulled myself up onto the edge and stood up again. Water dripped from my clothes, and I could feel the cool, damp fabric against my skin. But there was no time to dwell on it. The next ring was waiting.
By the second jump, I already knew what to expect. The second ring was deeper, and it took more effort to reach it. But that was the appeal. I enjoyed how the water amplified the movements of my clothing. The pants clung heavily to my legs, and my sneakers almost gently pushed me toward the pool floor.

Next to me was the boy in the tracksuit, also working his way through the water. I gave him a quick nod before resurfacing and bringing the ring to the edge. The third boy was now fully immersed in the game. His white training pants had – as expected – turned almost transparent, but he seemed completely unfazed by it.

By the last jump, I felt completely comfortable. The clothes, which had initially felt so heavy and unfamiliar, had become part of the game for me. I enjoyed the resistance, the weight, the sensation of the hood slowing my head whenever I moved. As I grabbed the final ring from the bottom, I felt my energy waning, but I wanted to see it through one last time.

For me, swimming in clothes was no longer an experiment but a challenge I wanted to keep enjoying. It felt different, more intense.

I let the water drain from my sneakers and pulled the hood away from my face. It had been a great day – and I couldn’t wait to jump back into the water next week.
This time I had brought a change of clothes but no shoes, so I sat in class with wet feet, but was otherwise dry.
