There are a few islands in the Delaware River. Some of them are used for some industrial purpose but a few have fallen back to a natural state.

Yesterday, I took my kiyak to investigate one of them.

I wore my light colored blue jeans, a white tshirt, a black mesh Eagles football jersey, two pairs of white socks and a good pair of Reeboks.

From where I launched my kiyak, there was an inlet just across from me. This was at the top of high tide so the current wasn't moving very fast. I paddled my way up the inlet further and further until I found a place to "park". It looked like the kind of place where I could get out of the kiyak easily. I climbed out onto the muddy muddy bank trying very hard not to get myself muddy yet. I had all day for that.

But as I explored, I quickly realized this patch of forest was way too dence for me to explore. Unless I happened to bring along a mashetti (a big knife) which I hadn't.

After about 10 minutes, I had given up and returned to the boat. Just as I stepped off the dry ground onto slippery bank, I lost my footing and slid on my backside about 4 feet until I bumped into the boat. Yuck! My whole back side was covered in thick brown clay-like mud! Well, what's a boy to do? I decided since there was no point to trying to stay dry and clean (that ship had sailed) I might as well explore the muddy banks for signs of wildlife.

As I started heading further inland on foot, the marsh mud was becomming deeper and softer and pretty soon my sneakers were sinking in 4-6 inches of soft mud. I hiked up my jeans so I could watch as the mud come up even higher to engulf my white sweat socks.

Boy this walking was tuckering me out and the mud looked so soft, I decided to sit down and take a rest. As I sat in the cool mud, I contemplated how little sleep I got last night and decided to stretch out for just a few minutes. I laid back until I could feel the cool dampness seeping thru my shirts and the back of my camo baseball cap. How refreshing just laying there in total privacy and closing my eyes for a few minutes.

It was time to get up and I looked at my front for a second and then rolled over trashing the entire front of me. I enjoyed feeling the dampness rushing into my crotch. I took care of business and got up.

Eventually I went back to the boat and paddled further up stream and then found a place to get out and explore the island.

(ok, I know the good part is over but theres one other cool thing that happened.)

As I hiked due south along the center of the island, I noticed what looked like a tree house or duck blind up in a tree. I wanted to investigate even thinking of climbing up to see what was there. But when I reached the base of the tree, I realized this was a huge nest, about 4-5 feet in diameter and at least 50 feet up. I have never seen anything like this in my life.

In all, I spent 2 - 3 hours hiking around this deserted island completely soaked and covered in mud. It was an awsome day!
